Painting competition for children
A regional painting competition for primary level students from the ethnic communities was held at the hall room of CARITAS Regional office in the town on July 31.
PARLAM (Protection and Establishing Rights on Land of Adibasi in Mymensingh), Manosher Jonno Foundation (MJF) and IPDS jointly organised the competition marking the International Indigenous Day-2011.
A total of 57 children from Kalmakanda and Durgapur in Netrokona; Dhubaura, Haluaghat, Muktagacha, Bhaluka and sadar upazila of Mymensingh and Ghatail of Tangail took part in the competition. Colour pencils, clipboards, erasers and art paper were provided among the participants by the organising authority.
The winners — Gracina Azim, Writu Azim, Sheuly Mina and Shrabani — were selected for a national level competition scheduled to be held in Dhaka on August 8. The chief guest gave away prizes among the winners and certificates to all the participants.
Earlier, competitions were held at respective upazilas and they were selected for regional competition.
The judges of the competition were Dr. Bijoy Krishna Banik, deputy director of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Sangrahashala; Mohammad Abdur Rouf, a lecturer at Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Fine Arts Institution and Sister Florence Rozario, a teacher at Holy Family Primary School.
Jospina Areng, headmaster of School for Underprivileged Children of Depuliapara in Dhubaura, said that such competitions would encourage the children’s creativity. However, rural children need far more support on this front, he added.
Sister Mita Rozario, an assistant teacher at Bhalukapara Tutorial Primary School said that the ethnic urban children get more facilities to boost their creativity, but their rural counterparts lag behind both in education and encouragement to creativity.
A discussion was held marking the opening of the competition with Theofil Nokrek, CARITAS regional director, in the chair. Father Robert Mankhin, Vicar General, Mymensingh Diocese was the chief guest.
Osman Gani, training officer of PARLAM-MJF conducted the opening ceremony.
