The education ministry is going to cancel the monthly pay orders of teachers of 554 non-government schools, colleges and madrassahs and cancel the academic recognition of 1,060 more such institutions, where teachers do not get monthly pay orders, because of very poor performance in the public examinations of 2008.
‘Less than five examinees from each of the 1,614 institutions have passed the SSC, HSC and its equivalent exams of 2008. Rules require the institutions to have at least 15 successful examinees in the secondary school certificate or equivalent exam and at least 10 examinees in the higher secondary certificate or equivalent exams,’ said an additional secretary of the ministry.
‘Show-cause notices were earlier issued to all such institutions and the replies were not satisfactory. We have prepared the list and we will issue the official order as soon as the education minister approves the list,’ the additional secretary said.
Schools, colleges and madrassahs in Bangladesh are set up by non-government quarters, and they later start getting financial support from the government in the form of MPOs only if the institutions apply for such support.
The government also gives academic recognition (licence to run an institution) to such non-government educational institutions if they fulfil certain conditions.
‘MPOs of teachers of 148 schools will be stopped and academic recognition of another 416 schools will be cancelled for poor results in the SSC exams,’ said another official involved with the process.
Likewise, MPOs of teachers of nine colleges will be stopped and academic recognition of 100 colleges will be cancelled for poor results in the HSC exams.
Besides, MPOs of teachers of 271 madrassahs will be stopped and academic recognition of 445 madrassahas will be cancelled for very poor results in SSC-equivalent dakhil exams of 2008.
MPOs of teachers of 126 madrassahs will be stopped and academic recognition of 99 madrassahs will be cancelled for such results in HSC-equivalent alim exams.
