Rajshahi University students on Tuesday went on a demonstration on the campus, demanding immediate election to the university’s central students’ union and revival of Teachers-Students Cultural Centre of the university. At around 11:30am, under the banner of ‘progressive students’ union’, around a hundred leaders and activists of the university unit Bangladesh Students’ Union, Socialist Students’ Front, Bangladesh Students’ Federation and Biplobi Chhatra Moitri brought out a procession from Shaheed Tapon Chhattar and it ended in a rally at the same place after parading through the campus.
Addressing the rally, the leaders and activists called upon the RU authorities to hold RUCSU election as soon as possible to revive the fresh and fair political activities on the campus.
They claimed that the university authorities allegedly did not hold election to RUCSU to stop democratic practice of the students on the campus.
Highlighting that the cultural activities have been stalled on the campus as the activities of TSCC had remained stopped for more than two era, the speakers called upon the university authorities to revive the activities of TSCC after constructing a fully-fledged building.
They alleged that the university authorities had started construction work of TSCC building in 2006 but the building broke down before its completion.
RU unit BSU president Shipon Ahmed, SSF convener Sohrab Hossain, BSF president Sham Sagor Mankin also addressed the programme among others.
Election to the Rajshahi University Central Students Union has remained stalled for the last 22 years while the last RUCSU election was held in 1989.
