BB gives 25 machines to police, RAB
Bangladesh Bank on Sunday supplied 25 counterfeit currency detection machines to Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Rapid Action Battalion to prevent circulation of fake notes ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
BB deputy governor Md. Abul Quasem said the central bank had already taken a number of measures to prevent circulation of fake notes. The fake notes detection supplied to police and RAB would be set-up at some busy shopping malls in the city.
The BB launched a special drive against fake notes after arrest of a number of counterfeiters and recovery of significant amount of fake notes in the last few days.
As part of the move, BB recently issued a circular to managing directors and chief executive officers of all commercial banks asking them to guard against counterfeit notes.
The nachines were distributed at the BB headquarters on Sunday. Additional deputy commissioner of DB police Mashiur Rahman and assistant director of RAB Mohammad Kamruzzaman received the machines officials of the central bank.
Dasgupta Asim Kumar, executive director of BB, said that the central bank had achieved success in preventing the circulation of fake notes in the cattle market during last Eid-uu-Azha.
The counterfeiters, who are operating to circulate the fake notes ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, will be also prevented, he said.
BB meanwhile also asked the banks to increase use of fake note detection machines in around 8,000 branches of the commercial banks, he said.
Besides, the central bank is making advertisements through the print and electronic media to create public awareness against counterfeit notes.

On 26 and 27 July, the law enforcers arrested six people and recovered around Tk 1 crore of fake currency in the capital.
Police also recovered currency-making materials and equipment from the counterfeiters.
The counterfeiters usually collected Tk 100 notes, removed the prints with chemicals and then turned those into Tk 500 notes.
Police arrested three people and recovered fake currency notes worth Tk 6,40,000 from their possession on Thursday night in the capital’s Paltan area.
On Sunday, DB police arrested seven counterfeiters and recovered fake currency notes worth around Tk 50 lakh at the Postagola in the city.
