The state-run oil and gas exploration company has detected a new gas layer at a well in Kailashtila gas field in Sylhet, officials say.
There were three gas zones in the well No 4 of the gas field. A new layer has been identified between upper and middle layers of the well on Sunday at a depth of 2,722 metre, Mortuza Ahmad Faruque, managing director of Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (Bapex), told The Daily Star.
“We have confirmed today [Sunday] that there is a new gas layer in the well,” he said.
The new zone of the well would add about 20 million cubic feet of gas per day (20 mmcfd), he said adding that it would take 10 to 12 days to go for commercial production, and thus inclusion to the national grid.
Gas production at the well was suspended for several months and the new zone has been detected following a 3D-seismic survey and work-over, the Bapex MD said.
About 90 mmcfd gas is being produced at the six wells in Kailashtila at present.
