A group of muggers drove away in a filmy style after seriously injuring three people, including a young man, from whom they snatched away an expensive mobile and other valuables on the Central Road in the capital on Wednesday midnight.
The police and residents said that the muggers driving a Toyota X Corolla stopped a rickshaw carrying Iqbal Siddiqui, his wife Nahid Siddqui and their son Amil Siddiqui who were returning home after dinner at their relative’s on the Central Road.
The group not only snatched away the mobile from Amil and valuables from his parents but also hacked Amil with a razor and ran over people who tried to resist them.
As the victim family cried out for help, local people approached to their rescue. ‘I rushed to stop the car as soon as I heard them screaming. The car was moving back and forth to hit anyone standing in its way,’ said a resident.
The car eventually knocked down one person during the encounter with the people and got away. One of their cohorts, however, could not get into the car and was caught and beaten up by the mob.
The police seized a pistol and a home-made petrol bomb from the detained mugger. He was detained under Section 54, inspector Atiqur Rahman of the Kalabagan police told New Age.
Meanwhile, the badly wounded Amil, aged 16, needed a number of stitches, according to physicians in Central Hospital where he was receiving treatment.
The police were reluctant to register a case in the incident as they were in a dilemma over zonal demarcation. They were not certain whether the Central Road falls in the jurisdiction of the Kalabagan or the New Market police.
Asked why no case was filed, Atiqur said that they were waiting for the victim family to file a case.
The police said that an organised group has been mugging in the area for some time now but they were yet to get hold of them.
