Journo Couple Murder
Lab gets DNA profile from Runi’s T-shirt
A laboratory in the US has detected the full DNA profile of a person from the T-shirt of slain journalist Meherun Runi, who was killed along with her
journalist husband, Sagar Sarowar, early this year, Rab officials have said.
“The full profile of a person has been found from the dress of Runi, and we suspect the person is one of the killers. But the person is yet to be identified,” Lt Col Ziaul Hasan, Rab’s Intelligence Wing director, told The Daily Star last night.
“Various samples and evidence collected from the bodies of the journalist couple and the crime scene were sent to the US for forensic and DNA tests. Some of the tests are yet to be done.”
Asked, Ziaul said Rab would work on identifying the killer (s) after receiving those reports. The elite force is already collecting the DNAs of the suspects in the sensational double murder case.
DNA profile of a person can be detected from his or her hair, dresses, footprints, palm prints and saliva, among other things.
However, another Rab official has said that while it is sure that the DNA profile of a person has been found, it is not certain that it is that of one of the killers because many relatives and colleagues thronged the flat after the killing.
Sagar, news editor of Maasranga television, and Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were killed in the early hours of February 11 this year at their apartment in the capital’s West Rajabazar.
The High Court on April 18 vented its frustration over the Detective Branch’s failure in identifying the killer(s) and ordered a transfer of the case to Rab.
