FFs’ attempt to kill Salauddin failed in Sept 1971: witness
A freedom fighter on Monday testified that the detained BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury might have escaped an attack by freedom fighters during the liberation war, in which his driver was killed.
The freedom fighters’ operation failed due to wrong information, said Kazi Mohammad Nurul Absar, the tenth prosecution witness against Salauddin, during cross-examination by defence counsel Ahsanul Huq Hena.
‘After the incident, it was discussed among us that we had wrongly killed his driver while attempting to kill Salauddin,’ said the freedom fighter.
Earlier, in his deposition, Nurul Absar said that a group of freedom fighters, including him, had launched an attack on Salauddin in September 1971 in an attempt to kill him for his atrocities on information gathered from his (Absar) friend Aziz Uddin.
He said that Aziz might have given wrong information that led them to kill
the driver of the car, in which Salauddin was travelling.
During the cross-examination, Salauddin, also Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member, was in the dock of the tribunal, also known as war crimes tribunal instituted for the trial of the 1971 war crimes.
The tribunal of Justice Nizamul Huq, Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Anwarul Haque asked the defence counsel to complete the cross-examination in an hour today.
