Noted woman entrepreneur Rokia Afzal Rahman has been elected vice-president of the International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh.
Rokia, chairman of the Arlinks Group and executive committee member of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was elected vice-president at the 52nd meeting of the ICCB executive board, a release said.
The position fell vacant after the demise of the Square Group chairman, Samson H Chowdhury.
Latifur Rahman, chairman of the Transcom Group, continues to remain the founder vice-president, the release said.
Rokia, who was the first woman bank manager in Bangladesh, is also chairman of Midas Financing Ltd, Mediaworld Limited and a director of Reliance Insurance, ABC Radio and Mediastar Ltd.
She was the first woman on the board of the Bangladesh Bank.
In 1980, she got into business, setting up an agro industry and now diversified her business into insurance, media, financial institution and real estate, the release said.
Rokia is a former president of the Bangladesh Employers Federation. She is a former chair and currently board member of Asian University for Woman.
