Cultural and rights activists, journalists, teachers, students, entrepreneurs, along with government officials of Chapanawabganj celebrated the 1st anniversary of Radio Mahananda FM 98.8, a community radio, last Saturday.
Proyash Manobik Unnayan Sangstha, a local NGO, launched the radio station last year. To mark the anniversary, the organisers arranged several programmes including rally, discussions and live performances. The programmes were held at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium in the town.
A rally was brought out from Shilpakala Academy premises in the morning that paraded main streets of the town.
Dances, performed by the indigenous artistes, added a touch of gaiety to the rally. At the end of the rally, a discussion, prize giving ceremony and cultural programme were held at the auditorium that saw a large turnout.
Abdul Wadud, lawmaker of Chapainawabganj-3 constituency, was present as chief guest at the programme. Hasib Hossain, chief executive of Radio Mahananda, among others, spoke on the occasion. Golam Faruk Mithun, convener of the managing committee of the radio, presided over the programme.
Speakers at a discussion were of the view that Radio Mahananda has made a significant contribution to peoples’ access to information through its programmes. In the bargain, it has won the hearts of the community in the district.
At the cultural programme, Iffat Ara Nargis, renowned singer from Dhaka, and local artistes performed songs.
