A ten-day European film festival jointly organised by Alliance Française and Jahir Raihan Film Society begins today at the auditorium of Alliance Française in Dhanmondi.
The organisers will screen twenty films from 20 countries of Europe at the festival. The countries include France, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Italy.
Two films will be screened everyday at 5:00pm and 7:00pm till May 15.
Today the organisers will screen ‘101 Reykjavik’ (88 minutes, 2000), directed by Baltazar Kormakur of Iceland at 5:00pm and ‘Kitchen Stories’ (95 minutes, 2003) directed by Bent Hamer of Norway at at 7:00pm.
‘After the Wedding’ (120 minutes, 2006) directed by Susanne Bier of Denmark will be screened at 5:00pm and ‘Lilya 4-Ever’ (109 minutes, 2002) directed by Lukas Moodysson of Sweden at 7:00pm on
May 7.
The film ‘Eight Miles High’ (114 minutes, 2007) directed by Achim Bornhak of Germany will be screened at 5:00pm and ‘Paris’ (130 minutes, 2008) directed by Cedric Klapisch of France at 6:55pm on
May 8.
On the fourth day of the festival on May 9, the organisers will screen ‘Black Book’ (145 minutes, 2006) directed by Paul Verhoeven of Netherlands at 5:00pm and ‘A Talking Picture’ (96 minutes, 2003) directed by Manoel de Oliveira of Portugal at 7:30pm on the day.
‘Lorna’s Silence’ (105 minutes, 2008) directed by Luc Dardenne and Jean-Pierre Dardenne of Belgium will be screened at 5:00pm. The film ‘The Magdalene Sisters’ (119 minutes, 2002) directed by Peter Mullan of Ireland will be shown at 7:00pm on May 10.
On May 11, the organisers will screen ‘The Sea Inside’ (125 minutes, 2004) directed by Alejandro Amenabar of Spain at 5:00pm and ‘The Novelist’ (107 minutes, 2008) directed by Hannu Kahakorpi of Finland at 7:15pm.
The seventh day holds for ‘The Son’s Room’ (99 minutes, 2001) directed by Nanni Moretti of Italy at 5:00pm and ‘I Served the King of England’ (120 minutes, 2006) directed by Jiri Menzel of Czech Republic at 7:00pm.
Oscar winning film ‘No Man’s Land’ (98 minutes, 2001) directed by Danis Tanovic of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be screened at 5:00pm and ‘The Trap’ (106 minutes, 2007) directed by Srdan Golubovic of Serbia at 7:00pm on May 13.
‘The Counterfeiters’ (98 minutes, 2007) directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky of Austria will be screened at 5:00pm and ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days’ (113 minutes, 2007) directed by Cristian Mungiu of Romania at 7:00pm on May 14.
On the concluding day of the festival, May 15, the organisers will screen the Oscar winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ (120 minutes, 2008) directed by Danny Boyle of the United Kingdom at 5:00pm and ‘I Was a Swiss Banker (75 minutes, 2007) directed by Thomas Imbach of Switzerland at 7:00pm.
