Detectives arrested five people, including two foreigners, along with fake foreign currencies worth Tk 50 lakh and equipments for making fake currency notes at Niketon in the city on Friday night.
The detectives also seized a printer, two laptops, 11 bundle paper, powder and chemicals, used for making fake foreign currency notes, from possession of the five — South African national Jinge Phillip Shifo, 35, Comorian national Samjela Criss, 34, and three Bangladeshis Stephen Look, 40, Gulam Kibria, 35, and Yusuf Ali, 30.
Detective branch additional deputy commissioner Mashiur Rahman told reporters on Saturday morning that a team led by assistant commissioner Mohammad Touhidul Islam raided a flat at Niketon in Gulshan at about 10:30pm on Friday and held the five.
He said that the two foreigners were involved in making fake notes of US dollar and euro and marketing them with the help of their Bangladeshi associates.
The foreigners came to Bangladesh for doing garments business but engaged in forgery, said Mashiur.
They also embezzled Tk 7 lakhs from a man hailed from Sylhet promising to send him abroad.
