At least three people were killed in traffic accidents in the capital’s Mirpur, Kuril and Khilkhet area on Wednesday. At Mirpur, a contractor was killed after a bus hit him at around 4:15pm in front of Mirpur Diagnostic Centre near Mirpur-10 intersection.
The deceased was Zahirul Islam Nipun, 39, was from Ujirpur in Barisal. He was living at Senpara Parbata under Kafrul police station.
Witnesses said a Bikalpa Paribahan bus hit the man while he was crossing the road at the intersection, leaving him dead on the spot.
Protesting at the accident, an angry mob vandalised several vehicles while the police immediately brought the situation under control, said Mirpur police subinspector Rezaul Karim.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. The police seized the bus but the driver and his assistant fled, said the police.
In another incident, a mason was killed at Kuril Biswaroad Chourasta as an electric auto-rickshaw hit the rickshaw carrying him and his aunt at about 10:30am.
The deceased was Motaleb, 25, from Amtoli in Barguna. He was a resident of Ghatpara at Kuril.
At Khilkhet, an unidentified man, aged about 50, died at a hospital early on the day after he was admitted there with injuries from a traffic accident at Talerteck at Khilkhet
Khilkhet police subinspector Rupom Kumar Das said an auto-rickshaw hit him at about 5:00pm on Tuesday while he was walking in the Paka Rasta area of Talerteck, leaving him injured.
Local people took him to the near Asian Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead at about 1:30am.
The police took the body to DMCH in the morning.
