The Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh on Monday launched a monthly newsletter and a website aiming to disseminate the sector’s information at the grassroots.
Post and telecommunications minister Sahara Khatun and information minister Hasanul Haq Inu were present at the inauguration at a city hotel.Speaking on the occasion, Sahara said the newsletter and website would play an important role in flourishing the information and communication technology as well as making the information available to mass people.
She said information is the main key of people’s empowerment in democracy and the present government has formulated the Right to Information Act for ensuring free flow of information.
Hasanul Haq Inu said the telecommunication sector, especially the cellular phone operators, is playing a crucial role to generate revenue and foreign direct investment.
But, the people involved with the sector are facing some problems like high taxations that bar rapid development of the sector, he observed.
‘The government should review and revise the Telecom Act and tax and custom policies further for the development of the sector. Actually, a roadmap should be formulated for the country’s telecom sector to pave the ways of adaptation of new technologies,’ said Inu.
The minister also stressed the need for designing a corporate social responsibility roadmap to derive benefits from the operators’ CSR fund.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chairman Sunil Kanti Bose, ICT secretary Nazrul Islam Khan, AMTOB chairman and Robi CEO Michael Kuehner and AMTOB vice-chairman and Airtel CEO Chris Tobit also spoke on the occasion.
AMTOB secretary general TIM Nurul Kabir conducted the programme.
The sector’s information would be available at the AMTOB website www.amtob.org.bd. Besides, an electronic version of the newsletter would be available on the website.
