The Bangladesh Telecommunication regulatory Commission on Tuesday asked mobile phone operator Robi to stop immediately one of its promotional campaigns
that offered holiday trips and internet television as prizes.
The BTRC in a show-cause notice served on Robi also asked the operator to clarify within April 29 why it had run such a promotional campaign violating the commission’s directive.
Robi on April 12 launched the promotional campaign titled ‘G Win exciting Holiday Package for Couple and 46 inch Samsung Smart Internet TV’, which announced to reward subscribers on the basis of highest hourly and daily usages.
According to the Robi offer, two winners selected on the basis of the highest hourly usage of voice calls will win couple holiday trips to Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet.
Another winner will be selected on the basis of highest daily recharge and highest daily voice calls and data usage who will win a 46 inches Samsung Smart Internet TV, said the offer.
The BTRC notice said the Robi offer violated the Interim Directive on Tariff and Marketing Promotion issued by the commission.
According to the BTRC directive, mobile phone companies are barred from offering any reward other than free talk-time, SMS and mobile handset.
