Eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain on behalf of Citizen Oikkya on Thursday demanded exemplary punishment of the owners of Rana plaza along with the chairmen and managing directors of the garments factories for the deadly incident. Dr Kamal Hossain said at the press conference at Jatiya Press Club, six months have elapsed after the Tazreen Fashion fire incident, yet there is no update on the investigation reports and arrest of culprits.
Rana Plaza, an eight-storey building, housing five garment factories, a shopping complex and a branch of Brac Bank collapsed in Savar bus stand area Wednesday morning.
However, the High Court on Thursday summoned the owners of Rana plaza and chairmen and all managing directors of the garments factories to appear before it on April 30 to explain their position over the incident.
Sohel Rana is the owner of the plaza. The HC directed the officer-in-charge of the Savar police station to implement its order.
Dr Kamal Hossain said, “As the citizens of a democratic country, we want answers from the Members of Parliament, what their responsibilities are and what they do in their own constituencies.”
Dr Asif Nazrul, teacher of Law department of Dhaka University referred to the incident as murder since the building was not fit for working .
“It’s not an incident, it’s a murder as the authorities of the garments factories forced the labors inside the building, other wise they will not get salary they were told,” he said.
The building was announced abandoned on Tuesday, Dr Asif Nazrul mentioned and demanded the exemplary punishment to culprits, who were responsible for the mass murder.
Politician Mahmudur Rahman Manna said an investigation should be carried out on the home minister MK Alamgir as he said something totally unexpected.
Politician Mostofa Mohsin Mantu mentioned that the death toll has risen to 1500.
Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Politician Mostofa Mohsin Mantu and Jamal Uddin Ahmed were also present at the press conference.
