Students of Jagannath University staged protests and blocked road on Sunday morning, demanding new dormitories and their control over the existing ones.
Teachers and staff of the university could not enter the premises
during the demonstration in the morning.Following the demonstration at Ray Shaheb Bazar intersection, traffic up to Sadarghat was halted since 10:00am, he reported.
‘Demonstration will continue till our demands are met,’ spokesperson of the student demonstrators SM Nazmul Hassan told the news agency. ‘The VC must give us assurance.’
The agitating students brought out a procession from the campus carrying placards, festoons and chanting slogans in support of their demand. They then converged at intersection. They torched tyres and clothes on the road.
Earlier on April 22, the students formed a human chain near the campus Shahid Minar. Later they laid a siege to their vice-chancellor’s office and staged demonstrations and blockades.
The students are holding protests since April 20.
The 150-year-old institution was upgraded to a university on October 20, 2005. Since then the students have demanded additional dormitories.
The university is situated in old town of Dhaka.
