The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on Saturday set May 7 to start arguments in the case against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojahid. The three-member tribunal, headed by its Chairman Justice Obaidul Hassan, took the decision after hearing the deposition of Ali Ahmed Abrur, the only defence witness, also the son of accused Mojahid. Mojahid is facing 34 charges for his alleged involvement in 1971 felony.
Mojahid was not involved in any crime during the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Abrur said in his deposition.
Mojahid was implicated in the case due to political reasons, he claimed.
During the deposition, Abrur also produced some documents at the tribunal in support of Mojahid’s innocence.
After the deposition, prosecution did not cross-examine the witness. Defence counsel Advocate Munshi Ahsan Kabir said that they would not produce any witness for the defence.
Prosecution is scheduled to place arguments on May 7 and 8, while the defence is expected to place its summing-up on May 12, prosecutor Advocate Moklesur Rahman Badal said.
Earlier, a total of 17 prosecution witnesses gave their depositions against Mojahid including investigation officer Abdur Razzaq Khan.
The tribunal framed charges against Mojahid on June 21 last year.
Meanwhile, the ICT-1 passed an order allowing Ameer of Jamaat-e-islami Motiur Rahman Nizami to take physiotherapy at BIRDEM Hospital on every Saturday.
