Shahbagh’s Ganajagaran Mancha brought out a jubilant procession in the capital on Thursday following the verdict of capital punishment to Jamaat-e-Islami’s front ranking leader M Kamaruzzaman for his crimes against humanity in 1971. Earlier in the day International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) condemned M Kamaruzzaman, assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, to death for his crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War 42 years ago.
Around 2 pm, the protestors burst into joy upon learning the verdict against Kamaruzzaman. They chanted slogans- ‘Fashi, fashi’ (hang hang) – and flew national flag at the time. They also showed victory sign.
Several hundred people from all walks of life including protesters of Ganajagaran Mancha brought out the procession from Shahbagh Projonmo Chattar around 2.15 pm, terminating at the Central Shaheed Minar.
In an instant reaction, Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarkar said “The victory is for all. We are joyous. All have been waiting for 42 years for the verdict.”
He also said their movement will continue until the completion of trial against all war criminals.
