Three days after the devastative fire, which broke out at Tung Hai Group building at Mirpur that killed eight people including the factory owner and a senior police official, law enforcers and the investigators of the probe body said, they are yet to find the source from which the fire originated. “We came to know that the fire broke out from the second floor of the 11-storied building but we are yet to unearth the mystery behind it,” Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence of Dhaka Division Jahurul Amin Mia, told The Independent on Friday.
While asking whether it is a sabotage or just a fire incident, Jahurul Amin, also the chief of the five member probe body that was formed by the fire service and civil defence immediately after the incident said, they are yet to interrogate the victims and eyewitnesses of the incident and they would
only able to say anything
about it after completing the investigation.
Assistant Director (Operation) of Fire Service and Civil Defence Ajit Kumar Amit, another member of the probe body, however refused to make any comments.
Deputy Commissioner of police of Mirpur Division Imtiaz Hossain, told The Independent, “The incident is shrouded in mystery and we are not taking it just as an accident. We are trying our best to unearth the mystery behind the incident very soon.”
who were identified as Managing Director of the Tung Hai Group Mahbubur Rahman, who is also a Bangladesh Garment Manufactures & Exporters Association (BGMEA) director, his friends Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police, Police Headquarters (Transport) ZM Morshed, Comilla district (North) unit Jubo League President Sohel Mostofa Swapan, a hotel businessman Emadur Rahman Badal, Sayed Nasim Reza, Mohammad Sahabuddin, Office Assistant of the factory, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ripon Chakma, the driver and bodyguard of the Additional DIG, and Mostafizur Rahman, a mason.
Mahbubur, hailed from Shobharampur village under Homna upazila in Comilla, was a local leader of Awami League and was an aspirant for the next parliamentary election with a ruling Awami League ticket from the (Homna-Titas) constituency in Comilla.
Mahbubur owned six garment factories – of them Tung Hai Sweaters Ltd and Tung Hai Knitting and Dyeing Ltd were located in the fire ravaged building while the four others- Tung Hai Knit Fashions Ltd, Tung Hai International, Agrani Sweaters Ltd and NN Sweaters are at Savar and Ashulia.
The building at Mirpur is also the head office of the Tung Hai Group and Mahbubur had his chamber on its ninth floor, beside a rest room. The ground floor of the building is used as the store, packaging section is on the first floor and ironing section is located on the second floor, from where the fire might have originated.
Although, even after three days of the incident the fire service officials failed to make any advancements over the incident, but the police officials who also investigating the incident termed it as mystery.
