A Dhaka court on Monday sent BNP standing committee member MK Anwar to jail in a case filed on charges of instigating communal forces and defaming a leader of Swechchashebak League. Metropolitan Magistrate Harun Ur Rashid passed the order rejecting the bail petition of MK Anwar as he surrendered before the court in the afternoon seeking fresh bail on the expiry of his High Court bail.
On May 12, the High Court (HC) granted bail to BNP leader MK Anwar for two weeks in the case.
Debashish Biswas, a leader of Swechchashebak League, filed the case on May 7 against the BNP leader with the Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka. Later, the court issued an arrest warrant against BNP leader MK Anwar on the same day.
The BNP policymaker at a press briefing on May 6 said activists of Swechchashebak League, led by Debashish Biswas, torched some copies of the holy Quran in the city’s Baitul Mukarram area on May 5 during a grand rally of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh at the Shapla Chattar.
Debashish said Anwar’s statement was “false, fabricated and derogatory”, adding that his speech was also “instigative to destroy communal harmony.”
