Ruling grand alliance lawmakers on Monday thanked first ever women speaker of parliament, Dr Shirin Shamin Chaudhury who chaired the first sitting of the budget session. Immediately after the inaugural speech by the speaker Jute and Textile Minister Abdul Latif Suddique, Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed, Workers Party leader Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Party leader Mujibul Huq, Whip of parliament A S M Firoj took floor for extending her thanks. Tofail said Bangladesh has set a unique example in the history by making a legendary personality and reputed lawyer as the speaker of the parliament.
“This is a wonderful moment as the capacity of the house is full after the return of opposition in the parliament,” he said urging the opposition members of parliament to stay in the house and play due role.
Tofail said the opposition should not take to the street as it caused loss of lives and properties. “You (opposition) submit proposal and I am sure the parliament will accept your proposal for discussion. you Just think your presence will make the parliament effective,” he said.
Workers Party leader Rashed Khan Menon said the election of a women speaker in the parliament has actually proved that the country was heading towards women empowerment. “I believe that the parliament will fulfill the desire of the people under the leadership of the new speaker. While giving thanks to Shirin Sharmin Jute and Textile Minister Abdul Latif Siddique welcomed the opposition for joining the parliament session and urged them to play their role to make the parliament effective. “I feel proud to be a proposer of your name as speaker,” he added.
