The pre-monsoon hot and humid weather prevailing across the country with a mild heat wave raging across parts of north and south western region has contributed to a rise in respiratory and diarrhoeal diseases, mostly among the children and the elderly due to contaminated food and water. However, the met office sources said on Wednesday the heat and the humidity may start abating in the next couple of days with some rains likely to cooling it, met office sources said on Wednesday.
The highest maximum temperature in the country was 36.3 degrees Celsius in Khulna, which is going through a mild heat wave along with Pabna, Bogra and Rajshahi. The situation was due to the south western Monsoon about to spread its wings across ushering the rainy season. But it has not yet reached the Bangladesh coast, remaining anchored still off Myanmar port of Akyab in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, generating humidity in the air making the pre-monsoon heat unbearable. It is likely to reach the Chittagong division in another two to three days and make it all over the country shortly after June 10, the met sources said.
Meanwhile, the heat and humidity contributed to a rise in diarrhoea among the city’s vulnerable group of people, like children and elderly due to contaminated food and water.
