Criminals attacked Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) in Anwara upazila and vandalised its office and assaulted some employees on Monday. Witnesses said over 100 youths, allegedly led by the chairmen of nearby three union parishads, riding on motorcycles stormed into the KEPZ around 11 am and went on the rampage. They vandalised the administrative office of the export processing zone and assaulted its 10-12 officials.
A KEPZ official seeking anonymity said the three UP chairmen who are also local Awami League leaders locked in an altercation with two high officials of KEPZ on Sunday.
Asked about the incident, Brig (retd) Hasan Nasir, a high official of KPEZ, said some locals came to him with some immoral demands. As he refused to entertain their demands, the three UP chairmen, along with some terrorist launched the attack on the KEPZ.
Officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli Police Station Mohiuddin Ahmed, however, said some people gathered at the KEPZ demanding the resignation of Hasan Nasir.
The OC also said he was unaware of any attack and vandalism.
