Singer Rumu Khan paid her tribute as an artiste and a daughter to music composer and singer, the late Mumtaz Ali Khan that touched the hearts of many at the commemorative programme organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at its Music and Dance Center.
There was a touch of melancholy in the singer’s melodious voice as she rendered her father’s mystic composition Agey jani na rey doyal.
The atmosphere changed as she performed a romantic number Karor pran-e madhur barosha.
Besides Mumtaz Ali Khan, noted composer and singer, the late Kanai Lal Sheel was also given homage at the commemorative programme on Tuesday evening.
The function opened with a rendition by the artistes of Kanai Lal Sheel Shilpy Gosthi of songs Kembe tare sope dilam and the ever popular Bondhu amar poraner poran in chorus.
Seasoned folk singer Nadira Begum received huge applauses for her remarkable recital of classic songs Rangila rangila rangila rey and Nishithe jaiyo phulo boney composed by Mumtaz Ali Khan. Mina Borua, noted folk artiste, also revealed the magic of Mumtaz Ali Khan’s compositions as she rendered Ochin gayer ochin bondhu and Gun gun gun gaan gahiya.
The listeners were also delighted by Kanon Bala Sarkar’s solo performance of Kanai Lal Sheel’s famous compositions such as Amar golar haat and O dhew khele rey. Sheikh Hemayet and Sardar Rahamatullah also rendered some well-known tracks composed by the late musician.
Earlier, a discussion session was held where Samsuzzaman Khan, director general of Bangla Academy; Golam Kuddus, vice-president of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote; Sohrab Uddin, director of the music and dance department of Shilpakala Academy, spoke on the lives and contributions of Kanai Lal Sheel and Mamtaz Ali Khan.
