At least 44 shops were brunt in a fire at a market in
the capital’s Modhya Badda early Thursday.
Police and shop owners said the fire originated from a short circuit in a cosmetic shop of Haji Super Market (40/Ga, Moddho Badda) and soon engulfed 43 other shops of the market at around 4:45 am.
On information, four units of local fire service rushed to the scene and could put out the blaze at around 6:30 am, said Kamrul Faruk, officer in-charge (investigation) of Badda police station.
However, no causality was reported.
The tin-shed market, burnt to ashes, housed mostly ready-made garment shops, along with some cosmetics, grocery and plastic bag shops, said Jalal Uddin, a shop owner.
Mohammad Yasin, owner of three shops of the market, alleged that the fire fighters came late though the roads were free early in the morning.
The losses, caused by the fire, were primarily estimated at about Tk 4 crore, according to the shop owners.
