Ten persons killed in city in seven days

Some 10 persons, including two businessmen and two students, were killed in the capital in the first seven days of June indicating deterioration of the city’s law and order situation in recent times.
Despite many initiatives undertaken, including special drives starting from May 14, by the DMP in the wake of growing lawlessness in the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is struggling to control the city’s law and order as seven persons were killed in the last four days of the week.
Among the killings, the most sensational killing incidents were the murder of currency trader Faruk Ahmed in Gulshan and a student of Notre Dame College Azizul Hakim in Arambagh on Thursday.
According to the data collected by the Financial Express from different police stations, some 30 mugging incidents took place at various places in the city, two robbery incidents were recorded, 3 shootouts one by SWAT and two by RAB-10, and a clash between musclemen of two real-estate companies occurred.
Hundreds of other incidents that occurred in the capital were not reported to police.
Various local human rights watchdogs like Odhikar and Bichar O Salish Kendra have expressed their concern over the city’s deteriorating law and order situation.
ASM Nasiruddin Elan, director of Odhikar, said the city’s law and order is deteriorating fast over the last few days as they read much more news on various criminal activities, including killings, on newspapers everyday.
“Sometimes we receive news of serious incidents having taken place before the nose of law enforcers which is scary for the city residents,” he said.
Criticising the shootouts by the elite forces, he said: “It should be stopped as many innocent persons become victims of such measures adopted by law enforcers.”
