The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday announced convening committees for its 71, out of 75 district units, dissolving the incumbent bodies and asked them to elect fully-fledged panels through council sessions by November 15.
The convening committees for the Dhaka city, Dhaka district, Manikganj and Sunamganj were yet to be announced.
The party’s office secretary, Rizvi Ahmed, in a briefing at the party’s central office announced names of conveners and joint conveners of the 71 district units and asked them to form a fully-fledged convening committee with 51 members for each district by June 25. The district committees have also been asked to form convening committee for upazila/thana/municipality committees by July 15, and for union/ward committees by July 30.
The party will also go on a month-long recruitment campaign to garner fresh primary members and renew the membership of the old members between August 16 and September 15.
The party’s national standing committee also set deadlines for holding council sessions at the grassroots levels. As per the deadline, the ward unit councils will have to be completed by September 30, council of the union units by October 15, council of the upazila/ thana/municipality units by October 30, and those of the district and city units by November 15.
If any convening committee fails to meet the deadline, it will also be dissolved.

After the party’s landslide defeat in the December 29 polls, the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on January 10 in Comilla announced that all the committees of all tiers of the organisation and its associate bodies would be dissolved and then reorganised through elections.
Following her announcement, the party’s top policymaking body, the standing committee, on February 1 decided to reconstitute all the committees from the grassroots to national levels in a bottom-up approach and formed six committees headed by the party’s joint-secretaries general to get opinions of the leaders of lower units. The committees interviewed the leaders of the upazila and municipality unit between February 3 and February 24.
The party had held its last central council session 15 years ago in 1993 at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital although, according to its constitution, the party is supposed to hold the council session every two years.
The party had held a representatives’ meeting with the participation of the members of the national executive committee in 2006.
