Kolkata witnessed a repeat of history when thousands of people including a section of Kolkata’s cream of intelligentsia and residents of Kamduni village brought out a remonstration march today afternoon on the street of the metropolis in protest against rising crime among Bengal women in recent times. Today’s march was almost a reminiscent of what the intelligentsia of all walks of life did after the Nandigram carnage in 2007. The protest walk was spearheaded by poet Sankhya Ghosh, actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay, educationist Sunanda Sanyal, economist Asok Mitra, actor director Aparna Sen and other notable persona of Kolkata.
Today’s protest walk commenced from College Square and after traversing a three kilometer terminated distance at Metro channel in esplanade in Kolkata. One of convenors of today’s walk, Poet Sankhya Ghosh read out a missive of eminent film persona Mrinal Sen – who couldn’t attend today’s’ protest walk. In his message on the occasion, Sen regrets that he could not participate in today’s walk of protest, but observed “today is a most singular day when men stand united against so many horrible doings, ignoring the ruling power’s threatening posture and misdeeds. I salute them.”
A series of rape and murder incidents rocked the state over the last few days, the last being the gang rape and murder of a college student in Barasat in North 24-Parganas district which resulted in spontaneous agitation by women of the area. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had to face angry women of Kamduni village in Barasat, where the incident took place on June 8, when she came calling there in an apparent attempt to blunt the growing agitation. Interestingly, Like the ruling CPIM in 2007, the Trinamool was vehemently opposing that law and order is deteriorating and that women were being hit the worst.
Mention may be made that eminent poet Sankhya Ghosh – who led first protest campaign against the CPIM-led Left Front for their doings at Nandigram in 2007helping consolidation of Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee’s political image and decimating the Left Front 34 years rule in Bengal – took to street against the Trinamool Congress government’s callous way of treating women’s honour in the state. Today’s marchers demanded that the Kamduni culprits be awarded death sentence.
