Guimara Thana Awami League (AL) president Jahangir Alam, abducted by ethnic criminals on June 17 was freed on Friday afternoon reportedly paying a ransom of Taka 20 lakh. Villagers and relatives of the abducted AL president on condition of anonymity said, his abductors had demanded a ransom of Taka one crore.But they negotiated his freedom instead paying tk 20 lakh with the help of local intermediaries. Jahagir Alam said, some 10-12 armed tribal criminals stopped his motorcycle at Baillachhari area under Matiranga upazila at around 3.00pm on June 17 and took him to a deep forest on foot. “They released me on Friday afternoon from Maischhari area under Mohalchhari and told me that I was released following the order of their high-up, Alam said, adding that he reached his home at around 6.30pm on the same day “. But Jahangir declined to comment on how much money he had brought his freedom.
“We have been bargaining with abductors through local negotiators during the past five days and we finally got back my father on Friday afternoon, Mohammad Hanif, elder son of Jahangir said. Hanif also said they are not interested to go to police or court for justice”.
Guimara Thana Officer-in-charge Bashir Ahmed admitted the matters and said although Jahangir was abducted from Baillachhari area under Matiranga upazila in the district but he was released at Maischhari area under Mohalchhari upazila in the district. Now Jahangir is in his house, the OC added.
However, the OC declined to comment when asked why did police failed to rescue the ruling party leader.
