Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni has called for greater support from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for capacity building of the existing marine institutions in Bangladesh.
During a meeting with IMO Secretary General Koji Sekimizu at the parliament on Monday, she also sought IMO’s assistance in creation of more employment opportunities for Bangladeshi seafarers. The Foreign Minister thanked Sekimizu for various technical assistance programmes undertaken by IMO in Bangladesh towards improvement of quality of maritime education and ensuring environmental protection, maritime safety and security.
The Secretary General lauded the achievements of Bangladesh in becoming a new destination for ship-building which would not only earn foreign exchange, but also create new employment opportunities, increase skill level and thus play a positive role in poverty alleviation.
