Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said many foreign companies were showing their interest to develop the proposed special economic zones in the country.
The government has undertaken a plan to construct seven special economic zones in the backward regions of the country to boost economic growth, she said.Five foreign developers and operators have applied for development of economic zones in Mongla and Sirajganj and the matter of responding to the request of the organisations is now under active consideration, she said in reply to a question from treasury bench member Mosharraf Hossain.
The prime minister said more foreign developers and operators have shown their interest and visited the spots for construction of the economic zones.
Besides, local AK Khan & Company has expressed interest in constructing a special economic zone on their 200 acres of land in Narsingdi, she said adding that a process has already been launched to set up a garment industrial park for BGMEA on 530.78 acres at Baoshia of Gazaria upazila in Munsiganj district.
The prime minister said a delegation of Japanese company Sumitomo Corporation has visited Manikganj, Savar and Mirersari of Chittagong to build economic zones there.
Chinese government has also showed their interest in the development and construction of Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone and Multi-lane Road Tunnel project under the river Karnaphuli, she said.
Sheikh Hasina said the government with the technical support of the World Bank would conduct feasibility study by world renowned organisation for construction of special economic zones at Mirersari and Gohira of Chittagong, Moulvibazar and Sherpur.
The prime minister said by 2021 many economic zones would be developed in the country making an immense contribution to creating youth employment, reducing poverty through boosting production and increasing export.
