Awami League advisory council member and minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta on Wednesday suggested enacting a law with a provision of TK 30,000 fine to stop usage of abusive language in the Parliament. “A law with provision of Tk 30,000 fine should be formulated to deter indecent remarks in the Jatiya Sangsad,” Suranjit said while addressing a discussion meeting, organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, marking the 19th death anniversary of Shahid Janani Jahanara Imam, at the Shilpakola Academy in the city.
The minister also called upon the leaders of the country’s two major political parties to behave decently being respectful to each other at least in the House to strengthen the democracy.
“The country’s intellectuals and general people have been taken by surprise at the use of indecent remarks in the Parliament by some lawmakers. This bad culture should end necessitating formulation of a law in this regard,” he said.
He also urged young parliamentarians making such remarks to learn the usage of language to make the House more effective.
Referring to the ongoing war crimes trial, the lawmaker alleged that a certain political party was doing politics on the issue, which does not augur well for the country’s politics. Holding trial of war criminals is the main issue of politics in Bangladesh, Suranjit added.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote’s advisor Sheikh Jahangir Alam presided over the discussion, which was addressed, among others, by Awami League presidium member Satish Chandra Roy, Krishak League vice president MA Karim and the organisation’s general secretary Arun Sarkar Rana.
