NAT’L ART BIENNALE
Lovy wins award depicting child labour
Young artist Munjurul Lovy has won Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy honorable mention award for his thought-provoking artwork Save the Children-1 participating at the 20th National Art Biennale organised by
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
The award winning artwork shows three children in very unusual and constrained postures. The child in the centre has his hands tied behind a chair. The distress of another child has also been portrayed in an intriguing manner with his head resting between his knees. The third child of the print is standing in a hopeless gesture with its back facing the viewers.
‘Award like this is a turning point for me and my career. It will inspire me
a lot to go on with my vision and ambition,’ a delighted Munjurul Lovy told New Age.
The artwork is the first one of his printmaking series having the same title, which is done mainly using woodcut technique.
In fact, the series addresses the theme of saving children from child labour and other hurdles those restrain their spontaneous growth. The second work of the series is also on display at the national art exhibition, which will continue till July 12 at National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
‘There are many factors those hamper children from growing up naturally. I have just tried to show that their spontaneity is restrained and mired in the society’, he added.
Born in 1989 in Pabna, Lovy is very much interested in printmaking with woodcut technique. In addition, he is also interested in drawing and painting.
Lovy’s works have been exhibited at around 13 group shows. Beside the BSA honorable mention award, He has earlier won Media best award in annual art exhibition, organised by Faculty of Fine Art of Dhaka University in 2011.
