Heavy downpour on Friday disrupted normal life in Greater Chittagong. The torrential rain has inundated low-lying and coastal areas of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar,
the Kutubdia island, Mohesh Khali and Teknaf.
The rain, which started on Wednesday morning, is continuing incessantly till filing of this report. The local met office recorded 109.4 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours. Inundation of the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong-Rangamati and the Chittagong-Khagrachari roads have cut off communication with rural areas. Overflowing drains and canals have become a serious concern. Even the Dalu, Sangu, Halda and the Karnaphuli rivers are now full to the brim. The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3 due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. All fishing trawlers and boats at deep sea have been advised to return to the coast and proceed with caution.
The heavy shower affected the normal pace of the city. All low-lying areas of the port city, including Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahadderhat, Chawk Bazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali, and Chaktai went under knee-deep water for several hours.
The torrential rain flooded maximum areas of Rajakhali, Kutubdia, Pekua, Mongnama, Bodor Khali of Cox’s Bazar. Other areas, including Rajghat, Matharbari, Dholghat, Bondorpara, Sadna Dail, Chorpara, Shapori Dwip and Jalia para of Teknaf were also inundated. At least five km of the costal embankment was damaged by the rain.
Crop lands in the rural areas of Cox’s Bazar district have been submerged.
The rain has also flooded low-lying areas of Banderban hill district.
Our Mirerswari Correspondent Mahabubur Rahman Polash adds: The rain has inundated many areas of Mirerswari. People near the hills are living in high risk of landslides.
