The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) could decide the fate of the Dhaka Premier League when its ad-hoc committee sits in an important board meeting today.
The meeting was called to apprise the BCB members about the outcome of the International Cricket Council’s annual conference, as well as to discuss several others issues.
The league has had several twists and turns already, with cricketers deciding to boycott the league over their payment-structure and only calling off the boycott after being assured by a BCB promise to keep the controversial gradation system in place for this year only.
The BCB initially deferred the players’ recruitment programme under this system, earlier scheduled on June 23, as it was awaiting an Anti-Corruption
and Security Unit
report on the recent match-fixing scandal, which was to be made available at the recent ICC conference but was ultimately not presented.
As it seems unlikely that they will receive the
report any time soon, the officials no longer feel there is any reason to wait it out. The delay,
however, has caused the league to potentially coincide with Ramadan, which means the BCB may have to wait for another month before the league finally begins.
‘The Premier League would be one of the major agendas in our meeting,’ said Jalal Yunus, chairman of the BCB’s media and communication. ‘We have to go through all the pros and cons before making any decisions.’
‘We also expect to be informed about the outcome of the ICC conference in this meeting. There is a chance that we will also discuss the election issue and the formation of new selection pannel.’
The three-member selection panel completed its two-year tenure on June 30.
