Dhaka stocks ended flat amid higher turnover on Wednesday due to profit-taking moves by the investors late in the trading session.
The benchmark general index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSEX, finished at 4,231.95 points, gaining 0.18 per cent, or 7.79 points.The DSEX on the day increased to 4,270.93 points within the first 50 minutes of trading, but afterwards the prices of the shares started to go down, leaving the bourse to end flat.
The turnover of the bourse increased to Tk 805.19 crore from the previous session’s Tk 762.53 crore.
DGEN, the old key index of the DSE, ended flat, shedding 0.04 per cent, or 2.09 points, to close at 4,503.27 points.
The DGEN in the previous trading session crossed the 4,500-point mark after eight months as it had gained 2.72 per cent, or 119.60 points.
On October 11 last year, the DGEN had dropped below the 4,500-point mark.
Market operators said that the market had declined on the day as investors who bought shares three or four trading sessions ago went for sell-offs to make some profits as the prices had increased sharply in the earlier trading sessions.
The turnover of the bourse is increasing due to fresh fund injection as the market had been on the rise for the last two months, they said.
The operators said they were very much hopeful about the market as optimism among the investors was growing gradually thanks to the measures taken by the government to revive the ailing capital market.
The blue chip index of the bourse, DS30, closed at 1,584.97 points, gaining 0.41 per cent, or 6.58 points.
Of the 287 shares and mutual funds traded on the day, 118 advanced, 157 declined and 12 remained unchanged.
Titas Gas led the turnover chart as its shares worth Tk 47.11 crore changed hands. While Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company, Unique Hotel and Resorts, Barakatullah Electro Dynamics, Meghna Petroleum, Summit Purbanchol Power Company, Aftab Automobiles, Active Fine Chemicals, Padma Oil and Jamun Oil were the other turnover leaders.
JMI Syringes and Medical Devices gained the most on the day as the price of its shares increased by 9.89 per cent while Shyampur Sugar Mills lost the most, 6.57 per cent.
