The modernisation work of Shaheed Hadis Park in the Khulna city has remained stalled for two months after cracks developed in the walkway pillars
and other faults were detected in the construction.
The Khulna City Corporation took the modernisation project of the park in 2011 at an estimated cost of Tk 8.33 crore.
The construction firm, Alliance International, which got the work order as the lowest bidder in the tender competition, was supposed to complete the work within one year from the date of receiving work order as per the terms and condition.
But fund crunch of the KCC reportedly stood in the way of continuing the work by the construction firm and the time was extended by one year for completing the project.
When asked, executive engineer 2 of the Khulna City Corporation and director of the project Md Nazmul Islam admitted that cracks had developed in the piling works and pillars of the walkway.
Former mayor of the city Talukdar Abdul Khaleque is held responsible for the problem as he used to push the contractor to for completing the project before the KCC election.
The project work will remain suspended during the rainy season and it will resume in the winter after revising the estimated cost as prices of construction materials would soar up by the time, the project director said.
The owner of construction firm could not be reached over phone for his comment despite several attempts.
