The time for the National Tree Fair 2013 has been extended by
one day in response to the demands of the visitors.
The fair, near the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital,
was scheduled to end on Thursday.The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, inaugurated the fair on June 5.
The forest department of the ministry of environment and forest organised the month-long National Tree Fair 2013.
This year about 110 organisations – 76 private nurseries, 19 government organisations, 3 non-government organisations and 12 other institutions — participated in the fair, said forest department official.
Forest officer Syed Mahmudur Rahman said a total of 8,24,471 saplings were sold at a cost of Tk 4,76,19,029, which is Tk 1.5 crore more than previous year.
The increase in sale would inspire the participants to bring different varieties of saplings more next year, he hoped.
He also said that around 620 species of fruit bearing, forest grown, ornamental and medicinal plants were available in the fair.
Medicinal plants include amlaki, arjun, salad kachu, ulatchandal, kalomegh, basok, harvhanga, neem, bohera, patharkuchi, arahar, thankuni, hartaki and geetakumari, he added.
BRAC Nursery has brought different types of cactus including golden barrel, red cap, chita and orchids including venda, kampara this year.
Krishibid Upakaran Nursery has exhibited the saplings of lal kodom, mishori dumur and laili-mojnu.
Some vulnerable and endangered local trees are also on display at the stalls of National Botanical Garden and Baldha Garden include sindhuri, kusum, dugdugi, baobab, chapalish, Nil and Ritha.
Mita Haque, a housewife from Mirpur area, purchased some cactus and orchids for Tk 3000 as home decoration.
Deputy Forest Officer of Dhaka Social Forestry Division Md Abu Naser Khan told New Age that the fair would probably close on Saturday as the participants used to shut down late even though the schedule had been extended till today.
