Rajshahi University on Saturday celebrated its 60th founding anniversary amid festivity and fanfare mood on the campus.
The day-long programme included colourful processions, discussions, cultural events, debate competition and tree plantation.A colourful procession was brought out at about 10:30am which was led by vice-chancellor Muhammad Mizanuddin. Several teachers, students and staff attended the procession.
The procession ended in front of the Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium after parading the main streets on the campus.
Addressing a discussion, the vice-chancellor urged the students to achieve their full potential through quality education and build a modern country.
He also recalled the memory of Professor Shamsuzzoha, the first intellectual of the country who was shot dead by Pakistani army in 1969 for leading movement against the Pakistani oppressive rulers.
Former vice-chancellor Sydur Rahman Khan said since its inception after 1953, the university always came forward during movements in the interest of the nation.
Pro-vice-chancellor Sarwar Jahan, former pro-vice-chancellor Mamunul Keramat, social science faculty dean Ansar Uddin, Rajshahi University Teachers Association president M Azhar Ali and general secretary Sultanul Haque, among others, addressed at the programme.
The daylong programme ended with a cultural function in the afternoon at Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium.
The university started its journey on July 6, 1953 with six departments under three faculties with only 161 students and 68 teachers with Itrat Hossain Zuberi as the founder vice-chancellor.
It has now about 26,000 students and 1,200 teachers at 48 departments under nine faculties and five research institutes and 16 halls.
