MC College students demand arrest of perpetrators
Students demand reopening of hostel
Sylhet MC College students on Monday demanded immediate arrest of the people who set he college hostel on fire on July 8, 2012.
At a human chain in front of the college hostel at Baluchar in the city, Student Movement Council also demanded the reopening of the hostel and compensating the affected students.
The students alleged that they had urged the prime minister, education minister, district administration and the college authorities to meet the demands but none of them paid any heed to the demands.
The students claimed that the law-enforcers did not arrest the identified criminals, who set the traditional century-old hostel on fire, though they were roaming freely.
The council president Rasel Ahmed chaired the rally, which was addressed, among others, by its member secretary Kazi Wahidul Islam, Jamil Ahmed, Mizanur Rahman, Sajib Das, Subrata Talukdar, Selim Uddin, Ruhul Ahmed, Bulbul and Khayrul Haq.
A group of Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, allegedly set fire on the hostel during a clash with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student front of the Jamaat-e-Islami, in the evening on July 8, 2012 that burnt 42 rooms of the hostel. They also vandalised windowpanes of the rest of the rooms.
