The detective branch police arrested five suspected hijackers in
different drives in the Sylhet city Saturday night.
The arrested were identified as Jamal Ahmed alias Kala Jamal, son of Taiyab Ali Khan of Nurani residential area at Subidbazar, Mirza Aslam Beg alias Atiq Mirza, son of Mirza Aftabul Islam of Bharthakhola in the city, Ali Sayef, son of Suleman Ali of Badikona village, Rashedul Islam, son of Sultan Ali, and Jalal Uddin Michel, son of Arzu Miah of Nazirbazar under Dakkhin Surma upazila in the district, sources in the police said.
The police picked up Kala Jamal and Mirza Aslam from the Madina Market area and the rest three from rail station area in the city around 8:00pm on Saturday when they were allegedly preparing to commit mugging in the city, the sources said.
Being contacted, Sylhet Metropolitan Police detective branch subinspector Rajib Das told New Age on Sunday that the arrestees were handed over to the Kotwali police in the morning.
‘They were accused in more than one cases filed with the Kotwali police in connection with the incident of hijacking,’ he added.
