Low quality elements blamed
Several cracks have been detected in the first floor of the newly constructed Motihar Hall at Rajshahi University. Officials of the shifted the students from the
risky floor after the cracks were found on Monday.
The authorities concerned blamed low quality materials used for building the hall.
The hall sources said the hall the reconstruction of the hall began in 2008 while it was first built in 1955.
Though five years have passed already, the reconstruction work is yet to be completed.
Hall officials said about Tk 1.48 crore were allocated to build three blocks of three- storey Motihar Hall while only one block was completed few months ago.
Hall officials also said the hall authorities on Monday inspected the
hall and found cracks on the wall in room 218, 219 and 220 on the second floor.
‘Several big cracks were also found in different parts of the hall.’
An official of RU engineering department, wishing anonymity, said the work order for building the second floor of the hall was given to the former RU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League president Ibrahim Hossain Moon.
‘Cracks were found in the second floor which was built under the supervision of Ibrahim.’
‘As very low quality materials were used for
building the hall, cracks were found within one year of construction,’ he also said.
Motihar Hall provost Jahangir Alam said he
was unaware about the details of the hall reconstruction as he was appointed to the hall only few months ago.
‘The officials of RU engineering department inspected the hall on Monday and they know what will be the next steps,’ Alam also said.
The RU acting chief engineer, Shafiqul
Hasan, could not be reached for his comment over mobile.
