The chief defence counsel for Jamaat leaders, Barrister Abdur Razzaq on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the verdict on the war crimes charges against the former Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Professor Ghulam Azam. “We are aggrieved; we are stunned at the judgment. We think today’s (Monday) verdict is unjust and it was given being driven by impulse,” he said this while addressing an impromptu press conference at his residence in the capital. He also informed the reporters that they would appeal with the higher court challenging the judgment.
“We want to say it clearly that the prosecution has completely failed to prove the charges brought against Ghulam Azam,” he said.
He also said, the tribunal awarded a 90-year old man with 90 years’ imprisonment which is absolutely ridiculous.
If any person was awarded a punishment like that depending on such testimonies and documents, then the provisions of crimes against humanity should be changed, he added.
Meanwhile, expressing dissatisfaction over Azam’s verdict, Saifur Rahman, another defence counsel for Jamaat leaders, said, “It is not proper justice. We will go to the higher court challenging the verdict.”
He told journalists this in an immediate reaction outside the ICT-1.
“The verdict was made based on faked documents,” he said. “Professor Ghulam Azam will roam free as an innocent citizen after the higher court’s verdict,” he claimed.
