Eminent citizens on Wednesday expressed satisfaction over the death sentence against Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid, convicted for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. The deputy attorney-general and the chief coordinator
of the ICT also expressed satisfaction over the verdict.Talking to reporters at the tribunal premises, chief prosecutor Ghulam Arieff Tipoo said: “We’re satisfied with the verdict.”
Another prosecutor, Mukhlesur Rahman Badal, said the verdict had fulfilled the expectations of the people. He also said that it had been proved that the Jamaat-e-Islam was an associate organisation of the Pakistani occupation forces and its leaders were involved in committing atrocities during the Liberation War.
“The country has been waiting for this day for 42 years,” he added.
Eminent writer Muntasir Mamun said the verdict had met people’s expectations. “This verdict will play a vital role in continuing the culture of justice in the country,” he observed.
Mamun described the Jamaat as a criminal organisation. “It’s a shame that the Jamaat had been given the chance to indulge in politics in Bangladesh. The time has come to ban it from the political arena,” he added.
Freedom fighter Nasiruddin Yousuf Bachchu said the verdict asserted that the Jamaat was a party of war criminals. The government should try the organisation for its role during the Liberation War, he added. He urged the government to execute the judgement immediately.
Expressing profound satisfaction over the verdict, Shaheen Reza Noor, eldest son of martyred journalist Serajuddin Hossain, said they were happy with the judgement.
“We’ll never get our near and dear ones back. But we’ve got justice through this verdict,” he told The Independent.
“If the execution of the judgement is not carried out immediately, our crisis and torment will increase further,” he added.
