Commerce minister GM Quader on Thursday said neither the political crisis nor ‘the negative propaganda against the country in the international market’ will be able to halt the acceleration of the country’s export in the current fiscal. Addressing the inauguration of the three-day Bangladesh Furniture and Interior Décor Expo 2013 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, the minister also noted that the export performance, particularly of the readymade garment (RMG) and the jute goods sectors was not affected by the hartals and the negative propaganda in the last fiscal.
‘The country’s export earning was $ 27.01 billion in the last fiscal year against the target of $28 billion, also registering an 11.22 per cent growth compared to the export in its preceding fiscal. And we’ve learned that the orders are not being reduced,’ said Quader.
The target for the export earning this fiscal is fixed at $ 30.5 billion, which will be easily achieved no matter what happens in the politics, he added.
Quader also noted that there has been negative propaganda against the country due to factory accidents like the Rana Plaza collapse.
‘Despite the negative propaganda, the RMG export was in an increasing trend,’ he said, adding that the export will rather be picking up due to the country’s ability to provide high quality products at the lowest cost.
The inauguration of the fair was also addressed by commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed, Jute Diversification Promotion Centre executive director Khandaker Mokhlesur Rahman and Bangladesh Furniture Exporters Association chairman KM Akhtaruzzaman.
