All-rounder Taibur Parvez grabbed five wickets before making a valuable contribution with the bat to help Narayanganj clinch the 33rd National Cricket Championship with a six-wicket victory over Faridpur in the final at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra on Friday.
Taibur picked up 5-16 with his left-arm spin to rip through the Faridpur batting line-up as they were bundled out for a lowly 109 runs in 42.3 overs and later when Narayanganj were replying he scored an unbeaten 29 runs to dominate the proceedings of the game as they reached 112 in 22.3 overs to seal the win with more than 27 overs to spare.
Taibur, who came in at number three, added a valuable 62 runs for the fifth wicket with Sharif (21 not out) to ensure that his side earned the victory without any further damage after they were reeling at 60-4 at one stage.
Opener Johny Talukder (25) and Minhaz Khan put together 48 runs to give them an ideal start before three quick wickets threatened to change the complexion of the game with Faridpur beginning to take the upper hand.
Taibur made a 37-ball 29 with three sweetly-timed fours to make sure that his bowling efforts do not go in vain.
Taibur, who played for Prime Doleshwar in the last edition of the Dhaka Premier
League, has been a major contributor for the champions throughout the tournament. The all-rounder, who was adjudged man of the final, made 114 runs and picked up six wickets in the tournament to win the man of the tournament trophy.
Earlier, after opting to bat – apart from the 31-run opening stand between Forkan and Arafat Sunny Jr – there was hardly any partnership that would have helped Faridpur post a respectable score.
Mosaddek Iftekhar of Moulvibazar scored highest 117 runs in the tournament while Narayanganj skipper Sajib Datta and Kamrul Hasan Bappi picked up 11 wickets each to share the highest wicket-taker award.
