President of Bangladesh Workers Party Rashed Khan Menon on Saturday expressed his apprehension that an unconstitutional government could intervene in national politics again. “If the election time government is not settled or compromised, apprehension would not be removed from the minds of the people. The nation will march on into conflict and confrontation. As a result, the country may face an intervention by unconstitutional authority,” Menon, who is also an ally of the grand-alliance government, told at a press briefing at Shahid Asad Auditorium in the city. He urged the government to declare a form of an interim government during the election period to remove all uncertainties regarding the next national election. “Nothing is clear about the form of election time government, administration rearrangement and executive power of election commission during election period. It is necessary to clarify it first,” he said.
The interim government during election period may be formed through all party participation, Menon said, adding, “The election commission must be strengthened by giving executive power of the home, public administration, local government and cabinet division during election period.”
If it is done, no one can manipulate the next general election, he claimed.
“Despite the government’s success in running the country, it is far away from the people due to its monopoly decision, terrorism, looting, occupation and lack of communication with the alliance. These factors have also blurred the success of the government,” the grand alliance lawmaker said.
Menon further said the ruling party has lost its mayoral posts in the recent city corporation elections due to turning a blind eye towards the share market scam, sufferings of rental power plants, Destiny corruption, Padma bridge corruption and tender manipulation by Chatra League-Juba League. “If such trends continue, it would be disastrous during national general election,” he observed.
He urged all non-communal forces, progressive leftists and the pro-liberation forces to be united in the upcoming general election.
He also demanded of the government the banning of Jamaat-Shibir as political organisations for their involvement in war crimes.
General secretary of Bangladesh Workers Party Anisur Rahman Mallick readout a written statement at the press briefing.
Among others, politburo members Bimal Biswas, Nurul Hasan, Fazle Hossain Badsa, Mahmudul Hasan Manik, Shafiuudin Ahmed, Hazera Sultana, Qumrul Ahsan and Rafiqul Islam Sujan attended the briefing.
