Land grabbers are filling up the channel through which the Turag flows into Buriganga at a section under Lalbagh thana to prepare small plots and ultimately sell to real estate developers. It is a very simple method. First they start dumping rubbish and garbage to fill the land. Then they raise semi-pucca temporary houses (In the picture) to avoid losses in case of troubles like anti encroachment drives by BIWTA.
They also prepare deeds, “managing” the land ministry officials, claiming the reclaimed portions of the river as private property based on stamps dating back years, which too are available at a price.
Then ‘enter’ them into volumes of the land registers. All are done with money. If that does not work then the future plots change hands in terms of flats to be raised there by builders in forward selling.
