Thousands of Grameen Bank (GB) staffs on Sunday demanded of the government the cancellation of the final report of the GB commission to split the bank into 19 pieces. “We would not allow the government to split GB into 19 entities in the name of nationalization till our death or change its share system. It is despicable that our dear bank is being split in the name of government’s assistance,” Shamsul Alam, president of Grameen Bank Karmachari Samity said.
The demands came at a sit-in programme inside the head office of the GB in the city, where thousands of staffs gathered wearing black badges to express solidarity in canceling the commission’s report immediately to save the bank.
Alam said that we can not understand why the government is taking so much trouble in splitting and forming a commission when there are so many other problems to address.
“We fear when somebody officiously comes forward to assist us. We don’t want anybody to loot our resources in the name of assistance. The GB has been resolving its problems over the last three decades and it can go on doing so. We don’t find any other justifiable cause other than damaging the bank if it is split into 19 pieces,” he added.
“If the government does not cancel the report, four crore people associated with the bank would go for tough movement. We condemn the final report of the commission. Such steps of the government to split the bank are nothing but arbitrary activities,” Alam observed.
